In 1925 the
municipal council decided to build a bridge to connect Lossi street with the Castle Hills.
The plan was made by Joh. Fuks, who studied at Danzig University at that time. The
construction started on 31st August and the bridge was accepted by a commission on 9th
November. A competition was organised to find the most suitable name for the bridge and
the most popular name was Lossi (Castle) Bridge. Yet the public started to call it after
the mayor of Viljandi of that time, Dr. Jaan Vares.
