Pauluse (St
Paul’s) Church was built in 1863-1866. The building materials were typical of Viljandi -
granite and red brick. The original plan of the church was designed by architect Franz
Block in 1861. The cornerstone was laid in 1863. The final plan was designed by architect
Matthias von Holst, who later became famous. He also directed the construction work.
Pauluse Church is called the country church, because in 1860 separate town and country
congregations were formed. Baron Ungern-Sternberg of Viljandi gave the site on his land
for building the church. The first pastor was Ferdinand Hörschelmann, who served from
1860 to 1875. For longer periods this position was held by August Westrin-Doll (1876-1909)
and Jaan Lattik (1910-1939). In 1866 the altarpiece by K.C. Andreas “Christ on the Cross”
and G. Knauf’s organ were placed in the church.
